On Criticism of Apple

Recently, Apple introduced two new computers, the MacBook and MacBook Pro in aluminum. Instantly, both came under fire from Macintosh loyalists, who decried their glossy screens, and the MacBook's lack of FireWire. Apple has done this before. 10 years ago, just after Steve Jobs returned to Apple, several major things happened. First, the iMac was introduced, and it dropped all legacy ports and was exclusively Firewire and USB for connectivity. Given that USB was a little-known format, and many people were invested in the older, proprietary, ADB connector, this was shocking. Yet, Apple was vindicated, USB became the dominant connector not just on macs, bt on all PCs, and today people decry having too few USB ports. Another thing Apple did 10 years ago was release Mac OSX (well, the public beta at least). Experienced users wondered why there were so few menus. Why did they remove the _______ menu, they asked. Over the past 8 years since OSX was released, we have come to realize that it actually simplified the UI, without degrading functionality. The same will happen with glossy screens. We may not see the wisdom in it now, but there surely is some reason why they are exclusively offering glossy screens.

Sidenote: Apparently, Apple changed the USB controller in the new MacBooks, creating Sync problems with Blackberries. That's just dumb. Who wouldn't have tested that?
